Avangard (also called Objekt 4202, Yu-71 and Yu-74) is a hypersonic glide vehicle developed by the Russian Federation using a Scramjet engine, that can be carried as a MIRV payload by UR-100UTTKh,[1][2] RS-26 Rubezh and RS-28 Sarmat superheavy ICBM and can deliver both nuclear and conventional payloads.[3][4][5][6] Avangard reaches speed of Mach 20 and is capable of sharp high speed evasive maneuvers in flight making it “absolutely invulnerable for any missile defence system”.[7] According to the commander of the Russian Strategic Missile Forces, Colonel-General Sergei Karakayev, testing of the system has been finished. The Avangard will become operational in late 2018 or early 2019.[8][9][10] Russian President Vladimir Putin, in his presidential address to the Federal Assembly in Moscow on 1 March 2018, announced that testing of the weapon is now complete.[11] According to Russian President Putin, Avangard strikes "like a meteorite, like a fireball”.[12][13]

In March 2018, Russia announced that the missile entered series production.[14][15][16][17][5]

Avangard is one of the six new Russian strategic weapons unveiled by President Vladimir Putin on 1 March 2018.[5]
