Distinction between UK and Great Britain

Is it really necessary here? 1801 had no effect whatever on this office (or any similar office), and it seems weird to emphasize this distinction that had no real impact on the Home Office. The Home Office had no jurisdiction over Ireland before 1801, and it continued to have no jurisdiction over Ireland after 1801. The Union of 1801 had an impact on parliament, but on basically no other institutions of British government. Why is this distinction necessary? john k (talk) 03:23, 23 April 2012 (UTC)
