Airport

In what will be a boost for the aviation sector in Maharashtra, the state will get a new international airport at Parule Chipi in Sindhudurg district in June.

In a written reply to a question by Nitesh Rane (Congress — Kankavali), industries minister Subhash Desai said the work on the project was expected to be completed by June this year.

This airport, which will be located in Vengurla, will provide better connectivity to the Konkan, parts of Goa, North Karnataka and Western Maharashtra.

At present, Maharashtra has three functional international and 13 domestic airports.

In his reply, Desai said work on the terminal building, taxiway, apron, administrative building and fire station had been completed, with work on the ATC tower, compound wall, A.C plant building, and watchtower, being underway.

Desai added that the work on the airport was expected to be completed by August 18, 2014, according to the contract, but had been delayed due to the opposition in acquiring 11.13 hectare of private land, a ban on heavy vehicles due to a bridge being weakened, heavy rainfall and restrictions on the mining of minor minerals in Sindhudurg.

The airport, which is being constructed by the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), is spread over a 275 hectare area and is located close to the Mumbai- Goa highway.
