The Qamishli clashes (September 2018) was a military confrontation between the Syrian Arab Army and Asayish forces in the city of Qamishli, Syria. The clashes strained relations between the Democratic Federation of Northern Syria and the Syrian government significantly, after a three-month period of improving relations.[1]

Control of Qamishli is divided between the Syrian government and the Democratic Federation of Northern Syria. This has led to uneasy tension between the two sides, which has resulted in events such as the Battle of Qamishli in April 2016.

The clashes erupted on 8 September 2018. According to Kurdish sources, the fighting took place after a Syrian government patrol of three vehicles entered areas controlled by the Asayish and targeted their forces with light and medium weapons, prompting the Asayish to respond militarily. Video footage showed the convoy of Syrian army soldiers standing still, surrounded by Kurdish soldiers who had their weapons in hand but pointed to the ground. After some time shots could suddenly be heard and both sides engaged in mutual exchanges of fire.[1] The clashes left 11 government soldiers killed and 2 wounded and 7 Asayish members killed and one wounded.[2][3]
