Zachary Mwai Mwangi (born December 22, 1995), known as Proud Refuge, is a Kenyan-American Christian hip hop artist, songwriter, record producer, and actor. He is the president, co-owner, and co-founder of the independent record label GBA Records International, and the founder of the non-profit organization Mountain Movers Club. To date, he has released two studio albums, an EP as a solo artist, and several singles with countless features from various names in the music industry. He produced much of his earlier material alongside his cousin G.K music. Proud Refuge, in reference to his label as a Christian rapper, has stated that his music is just hip hop/rap, though it reflects his Christian faith and solely inspired by God.

Early life and career

Proud Refuge's debut recording, Freshly Redeemed, was released in 2011 through Media House Ent. His second solo EP, Mountain Movers Club, released in 2017, became the first Christian hip hop album to receive a lot of traction overseas. This was followed by his hit single "Trust and Believe,[1] and Proud Refuge began attracting attention when the biggest Christian hip-hop platform Rapzilla launched his debut single "Sold Out",[2] produced by G.K music in 2016 which not only made joint of the week but also received traction in Africa on Kubamba radio.[3] Considered his breakthrough into the industry after being number 1 for two weeks straight on Kubamba Radio[3] in Nairobi, Kenya.
