The Big Bang Theory

The Big Bang Theory is an American sitcom that first aired on CBS on September 24, 2007. It was created by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady. The ninth season began on September 21, 2015. 231 episodes of the show have aired.

The show centers on five characters: roommates Leonard and Sheldon; best friends Howard and Raj; and Penny, an actress. The guys' nerdy, intelligent, asocial personalities are juxtaposed with the normality of Penny. Over the series, new main characters Bernadette and Amy have been introduced as girlfriends of Howard and Sheldon, respectively. Stuart, the owner of a comic book store is also a main character in some seasons. Leslie Winkle was briefly a main character.

"The Hawking Excitation" is the 21st episode of the fifth season of The Big Bang Theory. It aired on April 5, 2012 and features a guest appearance by scientist Stephen Hawking (pictured). The episode received mostly positive reviews.

Hawking had been asked to appear on the show previously, but was too ill to appear. He says he is a big fan of The Big Bang Theory and watched a rehearsal of the episode after his scene was filmed.

In the episode, Howard is hired to maintain Hawking's wheelchair and Sheldon is desperate to meet him. Sheldon is forced to complete various humiliating tasks for Howard, before finally meeting his hero.
