  • The fast food chain McDonald's wins a partial victory in its libel trial, known as the McLibel case, against two environmental campaigners.
  • Swedish musician Ted Gärdestad commits suicide by jumping in front of a train (he is found dead later that morning).
  • Walt Disney Feature Animation's thirty-fifth animated feature Hercules is released.
