The Natisone Valley dialect (nadiško narečje,[1] nadiščina[2]) is a Slovene dialect in the Littoral dialect group. It is spoken in Italy, in Venetian Slovenia along the Natisone River, bounded by the Torre Valley dialect to the northwest, the Gorizia Hills dialect to the southeast, and the Soča dialect to the northeast.[3]

Phonological and morphological characteristics

The Natisone Valley dialect has pitch accent, non-retracted accents (in comparison to Standard Slovene) on final syllables (e.g., vodȁ 'water'), late denasalization of nasal vowels, and diphthongs of the type ie, uo. Morphologically, present-tense thematic -i- in Standard Slovene is -eje-, the nominal feminine genitive is (Standard Slovene -e), and the nominal o-stem locative is -e (Standard Slovene -u).[3]
