Clear Comfort, the Alice Austen House Museum



  • Thomas Adams (1818–1905) – invented chewing gum; founder of the chewing gum industry, later teamed up with William Wrigley Jr; lived on Staten Island in the 1860s–1870s
  • Charles Goodyear – inventor; lived on Staten Island for several years; experimented with rubber 1836–39 on Staten Island; that business failed and he moved to Boston; patented the vulcanization of rubber in the 1840s
  • Antonio Meucci – inventor of the telephone; immigrated to Staten Island, settling in the Clifton area in 1850, where he lived for the remainder of his life
