List of Egyptian hieroglyphs

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
  (Redirected from List of hieroglyphs/O)

The following is a list of Egyptian hieroglyphs.

The total number of distinct hieroglyphs increased over time from several hundred in the Middle Kingdom to several thousand in Ptolemaic Egypt. The most widely-used list of hieroglyphs is Gardiner's sign list (1928/9) which includes 763 signs in 26 categories. Georg Möller compiled more extensive lists, organised by historical epoch (published posthumously in 1927 and 1936). The Unicode Egyptian Hieroglyphs block (Unicode version 5.2, 2009) includes 1,071 signs, with organisation based on Gardiner's list. As of 2016, there is a proposal by Michael Everson to extend the Unicode standard to comprise Möller's list.[1]

See the following pages for notable subset of hieroglyphs:

List

Unicode character names follow Gardiner's list (padded with zeroes to three digits, i.e. Gardiner A1 is "EGYPTIAN HIEROGLYPH A001"), with the addition of glyph names in NL001–NL020 and NU001–NU022, representing the 20 Nomes of Lower Egypt and the 22 Nomes of Upper Egypt, respectively. Z12–Z16 are extensions to Gardiner's list, including some Egyptian numerals.
