List of Major League Baseball players to hit for the cycle

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In baseball, hitting for the cycle is the accomplishment of hitting a single, a double, a triple, and a home run in the same game.

Hitting for the cycle is rare – in Major League Baseball (MLB) history, there have been 319 cycles hit through the end of the 2017 season. In the modern era (since 1901), there have been, on average, less than three cycles hit each season. The most cycles hit in a single major league season is eight, which occurred both in 1933 and 2009.[1] In terms of frequency, the cycle is roughly as common as a no-hitter;[2][3] Baseball Digest calls it "one of the rarest feats in baseball".[4]

John Reilly, Bob Meusel, Babe Herman, and Adrián Beltré (left to right) are the only four players to hit for the cycle three times in their Major League Baseball careers.

The first cycle by a major league player, and which is generally accepted by baseball historians, was hit by Curry Foley in 1882.[5]

The most cycles hit by a major league player in a career is three, accomplished by John Reilly in the late 1800s, Bob Meusel in the 1920s, Babe Herman in the 1930s, and Adrián Beltré in the 2010s.[1]

Four players have hit for the cycle twice in a single season; John Reilly in 1883, Tip O'Neill in 1887, Babe Herman in 1931, and Aaron Hill in 2012.

Cycles by franchise

Italic text indicates the current name of a current MLB franchise; names not in italics indicate either defunct teams or defunct team names. Teams are listed only as major league squads; minor league teams promoted into MLB do not have minor league names or tenures listed. Initial table sorting is by number of cycles hit per franchise and then by ratio of cycles hit to cycles allowed. Only one current MLB team has never had a player hit for the cycle, the Miami Marlins.[265][1]

Notes

  • The Milwaukee Brewers were members of the American League until 1997, when the team switched leagues due to an expansion-driven realignment of Major League Baseball's divisions. The Brewers have been members of the National League since 1998.
  • The Houston Astros were members of the National League until 2012, when, as part of the franchise's sale agreement, the team switched leagues to create divisional balance. The Astros have been members of the American League since 2013.
