Dio was an American heavy metal band from Cortland, New York. Formed in October 1982 by eponymous vocalist Ronnie James Dio and drummer Vinny Appice following their departure from Black Sabbath,[1] the original lineup of the group also included guitarist Vivian Campbell and bassist Jimmy Bain.[2] After the release of Holy Diver in 1983, the band added keyboardist Claude Schnell to its lineup and released The Last in Line and Sacred Heart,[2] before Campbell left to form Trinity and later join Whitesnake.[3]

Campbell's replacement was former Giuffria guitarist Craig Goldy, who contributed to the albums Intermission and Dream Evil.[2] For the 1990 album Lock Up the Wolves, Dio replaced Goldy, Bain, Appice and Schnell with Rowan Robertson, Teddy Cook, Simon Wright and Jens Johansson, respectively.[2] In 1992, both Dio and Appice were re-enlisted to Black Sabbath for the album Dehumanizer,[4] before the pair returned to Dio with guitarist Tracy G, bassist Jeff Pilson and keyboardist Scott Warren.[5]

The group changed the majority of its lineup again in 1999, when previous members Goldy, Bain and Wright returned for the 2000 album Magica.[6] Doug Aldrich replaced Goldy for follow-up album Killing the Dragon, before he and Bain left for the return of Goldy and Pilson.[7] Aldrich later returned briefly, before the final lineup of the group saw the return of Goldy and the addition of bassist Rudy Sarzo.[2] Frontman Ronnie James Dio died of stomach cancer on May 16, 2010, signalling the end of the group.[2]
