The Japan and South Korea national football teams are sporting rivals who have played each other officially since 1954. They have had 77 matches so far. The match between the two countries is often shorten as nikkansen (Japanese: 日韓戦) or haniljeon (Korean: 한일전) in their respective languages. The two national teams have not met in formal competition for 6 years, the last one being the semi-final of 2011 AFC Asian Cup which Japan won on penalty shootouts and carry on to win the title.
