Happy Death Day 2U is an upcoming 2019 American slasher film written and directed by Christopher Landon. It stars Jessica Rothe, Israel Broussard, Suraj Sharma, and Ruby Modine.[1] The film is a sequel to 2017's Happy Death Day, with Jason Blum again serving as a producer through his Blumhouse Productions company. The film is scheduled to be released on February 13, 2019, by Universal Pictures.

Premise

Two years after the events of the first film, Tree Gelbman unexpectedly re-enters the time loop and becomes determined to escape it after finding out her friends are now involved. When she discovers that Lori Spengler, the original killer, has been murdered, Tree must face the new killer in order to uncover their identity and break free of the time loop once and for all.

Development

Director Christopher Landon has talked about the possibility of a sequel, focusing on why Tree went into a time loop.[8] Jessica Rothe stated that while most horror sequels retread the original, Landon's pitch instead "elevates the movie from being a horror movie into a Back to the Future type of genre film where the sequel joins us right from where we left off, it explains a lot of things in the first one that didn't get explained, and it elevates everything."[9]

Pre-production

On May 1, 2018, Blumhouse Productions announced that Landon would return to direct the film, with Rothe and Israel Broussard reprising their roles while Suraj Sharma and Sarah Yarkin joined the cast.[10] The next day, it was announced that Ruby Modine would reprise her role.[11]

Filming

Principal photography on the film began on May 14, 2018, in New Orleans, Louisiana.[12]

Post-production

In November 2018, Ben Baudhuin was confirmed to be the editor.[13]

Release

Happy Death Day 2U is scheduled to be released on February 13, 2019. It was originally scheduled to be released one day later, on Valentine's Day,[14] but was rescheduled after protest from relatives of the victims of the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting, which happened exactly one year prior.[15]
