Haider Aziz Safwi is an Indian politician and the present Deputy Speaker of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. He was a cabinet minister in the TMC government's first term in office and held the portfolios of minister for cooperation and inland water transport and minister for correctional administration. He has served as the Director General of Police(fire and emergency services),Government of West Bengal. He retired from the Indian Police Service in 2005 [1] He is now an MLA, elected from the Uluberia Purba constituency in the West Bengal state assembly election, 2011. As an I.P.S officer, Safwi was respected for his honesty, integrity and bravery. He held important positions like d.g.fire and emergency services,d.g enforcement branch,sp 24parganas(undivided),deputy commissioner detective department(kolkata police) among others. He is a recipient of the presidents police medal for distinguished service and the police medal for meritorious service. However, despite his accomplishments, many felt that his differences with the then Chief Minister, Buddhadeb Bhattacharya, resulted in him being unfairly denied a shot at the officer of Police Commissioner of Kolkata. Safwi was inspired by Mamata Banerjee's honesty and the service she had rendered to the people, specially the farmers in Singur. This was what prompted him to join the party in 2009 post his retirement from the I.P.S. He contested the 2011 assembly elections on a tmc ticket from uluberia purba and won that seat by a margin of over 19000 votes following which he was inducted as a cabinet minister in the Mamata Banerjee government on 20 May 2011. In the year 2016, Safwi was renominated by the tmc from the Uluberia Purba seat and he managed to retain it by a margin of 16269 votes. Owing to his seniority and experience in administration, he was elected unanimously as the Deputy Speaker of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. Throughout his political career,Safwi has maintained a clean and non-controversial image.
