The Brazilian National Archives (in Portuguese: Arquivo Nacional) were created in 1838 as the Imperial Public Archives and are in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The building was designed by engineers Antonio Pinheiro Guimarães Francisco and Teodoro Antonio de Oliveira in the Neoclassical style and uses gneiss.[1] They were renamed in 1911, and are located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

From 1868 to 1983, the building housed the old Brazilian Mint.[2] Access to the building is through a classical portal with three pediments on the same facade.

The National Archives offers several services, including in-person research services[3] and providing copies and trasncriptions of documents to remote users[4].

The archive collection include 1.74 million photographs and negatives, 20,000 illustrations, 44,000 maps, 124,000 films and 4,000 videotapes.[5] The library holds collections on history, library science and law with 43,000 volumes, 900 newspapers and 6,300 rare works.
